Social Work Student Receives Hogg Foundation Mental Health Scholarship
Cynthia Jimenez was selected by the Hogg Foundation for the 2018 Ima Hogg Mental Health Scholarship. Ms. Jimenez was nominated by ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ Professor Mark Lusk based on what he describes as her “outstanding academic abilities, which are coupled with a deep commitment to social justice and mental health.” The award carries a $5,000 annual stipend.
Currently Cynthia is enrolled in the Master of Social Work Program. She also works as the Neighborhood Relations Coordinator for the Central Region in the El Paso Police Department. Ms. Jimenez received the Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. She has worked as the Aftercare Counselor in a Washington, D.C., homeless and runaway shelter for teens before returning to El Paso to pursue graduate studies.
Upon receiving the scholarship, Ms. Jimenez stated, “I am studying social work because I am passionate about promoting positive and progressive social justice change on a mezzo and macro level. I am honored and humbled to have received the Ima Hogg Mental Health Scholarship. This scholarship will enable me to better serve the people of El Paso as I will be able to focus greater attention on my studies and job without the added stress of academic debt. I am deeply grateful for this support as I am dedicated to continuing my work to address community concerns and to improve the quality of life for all who are affected by mental illness.”
