STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: SONIA MADRID Sonia Madrid's family migrated to El Paso from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, when she was in elementary school. She graduated from Del Valle High School in 1995 and earned a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Bilingual Education in 2000 from 成人头条. Sonia felt a need to learn about literacy development from her own experience in different ways of developing literacy in English Language Learners (ELLs) and native English speakers. She has worked as a teacher in both monolingual and bilingual settings for twelve years.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: DR. SARAH JEAN JOHNSON Assistant Professor, M.Ed. in Literacy Education Dr. Sarah Johnson came to 成人头条 in 2018 after completing her doctorate in education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She had previously taught courses in graduate research methods as a lecturer at UCLA and did postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California. Dr. Johnson studies the interactional microprocesses involved in language and literacy learning while also accounting for the larger social and historical contexts. The El Paso region has offered an exciting new transnational and multilingual setting for her to do this research. With a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, she is currently studying culturally sustaining pedagogical practices in community arts programs at the border.
