As a field central to technological, industrial and economic development, the Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering takes a multidisciplinary approach, allowing students to tailor their degree to prepare to work in a specialized field of their choice. Courses cover ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, superconductors, composites and other materials systems.

As a doctoral student, Emilio Loera has the opportunity to conduct his own materials science experiments at Argonne National Laboratory, working with field experts, scientists and other students. Back on campus in the lab of Brian Schuster, Ph.D., he has gained access to equipment, conferences and networking events that have propelled his future career as a materials scientist, including being able to attend the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics, one of the leading conferences in the field.
