Across Europe and around the world, as the COVID-19 outbreak confines people to their homes and apartments, individuals began to gather spontaneously and collectively on their balconies and outdoor spaces - to applaud medical staff working on the frontline against the virus, greet their neighbors, perform music, take part in spontaneous flash mobs, or just make the most of the sunshine. In that spirit the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts presents El Balcón a virtual exhibition by a community of contemporary artists and friends from around the globe, with a special selection of voices from our border region, El Balcón Fronterizo.
Each participating artist has been invited to interact with our audiences and with one another in a video format of less than 30 minutes in length giving them a balcony of time to share a creative expression in the context of the current situation. The series will include video works, studio visits, reflections on daily life, video manifestos and creative workshops. One video will be from an international artist selected Ivan Buenader on behalf of Proyecto Changarrito (Spain/Mexico). The second video will feature a local artist from El Paso and Juarez selected by Edgar Picazo of Azul Arena (Mexico/EEUU). The videos will be collected in an archive on the Rubin Center website and as a series will form an artistic snapshot of this particular moment in our shared history.
