Indigenous Land Acknowledgment
As members of the University of Texas System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, we acknowledge that we meet on unceded Indigenous lands.
We recognize and pay our respects to the Indigenous people with long ties to this land: Jumano, Lipan Apache, Manso, Mescalero Apache, Piro, and Suma. We also recognize and pay our respects to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Piro/Manso/Tiwa Indian Tribe of the Pueblo of San Juan de Guadalupe, and Tortugas Pueblo.
Furthermore, we acknowledge and pay our respects to the Carrizo & Comecrudo, Coahuiltecan, Caddo, Tonkawa, Comanche, Lipan Apache, Alabama-Coushatta, Kickapoo, Tigua Pueblo, and all the American Indian, Native Alaskan, and Indigenous Peoples and communities who have been or have become a part of these lands and territories in Texas, as part of Turtle Island.
Land acknowledgement alone is insufficient. As brothers and sisters of historically underserved and underrepresented minorities, we promise to honor the history and culture of all Indigenous people, encourage others to do so, and commit to supporting them and their descendants in their pursuit of equity, inclusion and justice.
