Adolescents, Youth, and Young Adults (AYAS) Pilot Study
Exploratory study led by university scholars in partnership with community partners on perspective of youth and young adults in two rural underserved communities in a border community. The study was cross-sectional in nature and utilized a mix-method approach. 141 (n=141) youth and young adults (ages 18-39) participants were recruited. Salient themes found include knowledge about cancer types; access to health care; prevention; and perceived impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Findings highlight a lack of knowledge and orientation on cancer in youth and young adults suggesting the need for community tailored education and screening interventions. The way forward in cancer prevention and care is to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration between the behavioral social and clinical sciences. Research supported by Grant 2U54MD007592 from the National Institutes on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
