Certificate Program
Program description
The graduate certificate program in Physics will provide students with a thorough training
in the basic physics concepts. This program is appropriate for those who are graduates
in other related fields such as engineering, mathematical, chemical sciences and also
physics majors who want further training in physics but do not want to go through the
rigors of a graduate degree program. The focus is on exposure to basic concepts, which
will also be helpful for graduates planning to be secondary school teachers. The courses
will strengthen skills that will allow them to improve their job prospects and also to enter
graduate degree programs. The program contains topics from both modern and classical
physics.
Admission Criteria
The criteria for admission in to the graduate certificate program will be similar to that of
the MS program. The students will be required to have BS in physics or in a related field
such as chemistry, mathematics, engineering; who have completed the PHYS 3351,
PHYS 4341, PHYS 4355 or equivalents. The admission to graduate school and a
minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Courses
The certificate requires completion of 5 courses for a total of 15 credit hours. The
program contains 3 required courses: PHYS 5321 (Mechanics), PHYS 5341
(Electrodynamics), PHYS 5361 (Quantum Mechanics). The elective courses from which
students should choose any two courses are: PHYS 5365 (Advances Statistical Physics),
PHYS 5371 (Solid State Physics), PHYS 5325 (Mathematical Physics), and PHYS 5393
(Special Topics in Physics).
