CERTIFICATE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The State of Texas provides requirements for their educator certifications. The lists these requirements in title 19, part 7, chapters 230, 239, 240, and 241. In addition to the summaries included below, educators must meet and adhere to the Educators’ Code of Ethics and satisfy a background check to receive and maintain their credentials.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES
Principal-EC-12
- Conferred master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Pass the principal certification examinations.
- Hold a valid classroom teaching certificate.
- Complete two creditable years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher.
- Complete requirements for the principal preparation program.
Superintendent-EC-12
- Conferred master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Pass the superintendent certification examination.
- Hold a principal certificate or the equivalent issued under this title or by another state or country.
- Complete requirements for the superintendent preparation program.
- Conferred master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Pass the school counselor certification examination.
- Complete two creditable years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher.
- Complete requirements for the school counselor preparation program.
Educational Diagnostician-EC-12
- Conferred master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Pass the educational diagnostician certification examination.
- Hold a valid classroom teaching certificate.
- Complete two creditable years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher.
- Complete requirements for the educational diagnostician preparation program.
Reading Specialist-EC-12
- Conferred master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education recognized.
- Complete the reading specialist examination.
- Complete two creditable years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher.
- Complete requirements for the reading specialist preparation program.
Notification of potential ineligibility for certification
Any individual who has been convicted of an offense may be ineligible for issuance of a certificate upon completion of the Educator Preparation Program. For more information, please refer to the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC) rules prescribed in. Individuals have the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter as provided in (relating to Preliminary Evaluation of Certification Eligibility).
