Why Chicana/o Studies? / What can I do with this degree?
As a field of study, Chicano Studies focuses on the Mexican origin population in the U.S. in a multi- and inter-disciplinary framework. It emphasizes the dynamics of the U.S.-Mexico border and Latino presence throughout the nation. In addition, it provides an opportunity for for students to link that knowledge with other disciplines and professional careers and think critically about issues such as race, ethnicity, class and gender.

· Learn the historical context of Mexican American students in the American school system.
· Gain an understanding of immigration patterns and their impact on various sectors of industry and government.
· Examine patterns of urban/rural spread of the Mexican origin population in the U.S.-Mexico border and study the socioeconomic trends of the Latino Population.
· Develop a wide variety of skills including oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish, cross-cultural communication skills, knowledge of binational dynamics that affect commerce and population movements, research skills, digital communication skills, analytic and problem solving skills.
In addition to proceeding to graduate or profession school, many graduates find employment in the following areas/organizations:
a) Federal, state and local government employment in a wide range of occupations
b) Law enforcement at various levels
c) Non-profit social service agencies
d) Health professions
e) Cultural Heritage and Preservation organizations
f) Binational entities in the public and private sectors
