Confidential Services
Counseling and Psychological Services services are confidential. In general, the privacy of all communications between a counselor and a client are protected by law. Counseling and Psychological Services can only release information about your treatment to others with your written permission. However, there are a few exceptions. These special circumstances are:
- When there is reason to believe that a client may be in imminent risk of harming themselves or others.
- When a court of law orders the release of information.
- When there is reason to believe that a minor, elderly person or person with a disability is in danger of being, is now being, or has been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused or neglected.
- When a client discloses to their current counselor that a previous mental health provider was sexually inappropriate (Upon the client’s request, the client’s own identity may remain anonymous).
- When a client is under the age of 18 (additional rules of confidentiality may apply).
Counseling and Psychological Services staff would like you to know that Counseling and Psychological Services cannot guarantee the confidentiality of communications transmitted via e-mail and cellular phone. It is recommended that you contact the Center via land-line telephone or U.S. Mail.
This written summary of exceptions to confidentiality should prove helpful in informing you about potential problems. However, if you have questions or concerns, please discuss them with a CAPS counselor.
