The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Resource Sciences at ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ welcomes you to the Weird Water Adventure, an event supported by the Halliburton Foundation. During this virtual workshop event, you get the opportunity to learn what researchers from our department find most interesting about water and to interact with them and our undergraduate and graduate students.
The intent of this event is to encourage high school students to learn about Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences at ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ, the importance of this research for society, and about exciting job perspectives in this field.
Adventure Themes that will be presented are
Water and Plants – From Leaf to Root
Get the dirt on how plants acquire water from Dr. Hugo Gutierrez.

Water – Atom by Atom Join Dr. James D. Kubicki on the atomic level, where this molecule shows fascinating properties.

Unlocking Water in Minerals – Life in Unexpected Places Some minerals contain water – Dr. Jie Xu investigates if organisms can access it to make a living.

Water and Weather – From Inclement to Bone Dry Water and weather are intimately linked – explore with Dr. Tom Gill & Team the usual and unusual ways of how these interactions work.

Our Daily Water – A Precious Resource Our aquifers hold the groundwater that is essential for household use and irrigation. Dive into this topic with Dr. Mark Engle, who is concerned about how increasing saltiness of this water may impact our future.

Once you have submitted the completed material, you will receive
- A UV flashlight
- A hand lens
- A clip-on macro lens for your cell phone
Optional online pre- and post-workshop surveys
In coordination with the Weird Water Adventure Workshop, the organizers of the workshop are conducting a study to assess the impact of such events. You are not obligated to take part in the study if you attend the workshop.
If you choose to take part in the study, we are offering students an electronically delivered Amazon gift-card in the amount of $50 as an incentive for completing the pre-work survey before the Weird Water Adventure event and the the post-workshop study afterwards.
