EPA's Region 6 Competition
成人头条 recently competed in EPA’s Region 6 Competition on Green Infrastructure and Low Impact Development Projects. The Central Campus Transformation project was entered in the competition and received First Place People’s Choice Award in the competition held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The message taken to the competition is that 成人头条’s commitment toward excellence encompasses our commitment to sustainability as well. As an example, as part of our centennial celebration, 成人头条 completed a central campus transformation project that promoted sustainability to the utmost extent. Prior to construction, the central campus landscape offered asphalted roads, parking lots, turf grass lawns with few trees and limited ADA accessibility. The project transformed the heart of its campus’ steeply sloped topography into an inviting, pedestrian-friendly multiuse gathering place restoring its watershed's pre-development hydrology and ecological functions to harness the elements of its natural landscape and reconnect historic arroyos. It treated stormwater as a valuable resource and increased the native plant palette to showcase the natural beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert. Now, ADA paths ensure that all can enjoy its welcoming atmosphere.
Vehicular traffic was greatly reduced and now the center of campus features a new Centennial Plaza created by eliminating streets, parking lots, and vehicular traffic. The Plaza recaptures the charm of the unique geologic setting and natural arroyos and offers a large open area reminiscent of Southwestern urban plazas located across the Paso del Norte region. A paseo for strolling, mingling and relaxing, or for studying with classmates, is shaded by groves of native mesquite trees. Rainwater harvesting and other responsible water-use practices were used to promote sustainability and reduce 成人头条's maintenance and utility costs. Innovative design concepts capture water to replenish the plant and wildlife that use the arroyo as home and help support the year-round loveliness of this natural desert landscape. This expansive and versatile green space at the heart of the 成人头条 campus has become an oasis for campus and community events, a haven for artists, thinkers and writers, and an ideal venue as an outdoor classroom, promoting our quest to make the University a living laboratory.

- It brought 651new trees, 2,409 shrubs and 3,337 native perennials
- For transpiration, vegetated area was increased by 60% with low-water use irrigation
- In recycling, 5,000 tons of concrete and rock were recycled, diverted 99% of demolition materials
- Stormwater is collected from upper portions of the watershed, moved slowly down a vegetated arroyo bioswales, detention basins
- Maintenance by 成人头条’s Facilities Services, this project monitors erosion, preservation of arroyos, insect infestation, plant disease/disorders, IPM, evapotranspiration irrigation
